A short update — August 2025

Next MMO Folklorist book to be announced later this month.

It’s been a good long while since I last posted here so I thought I’d offer a little update on what’s been happening and what’s coming up.

Why the silence?

There are, chiefly, three reasons for the lack of posts here over the past couple of years.

Firstly, my personal life has been very busy. This past year I’ve been retraining for a new career in the education sector. I start that job in an official capacity next month. Because of this I’ve not had a whole lot of time to play games (particularly MMOs, where I need to be able to form some kind of habit around them) and therefore I’ve not felt particularly inspired to blog.

Leading on from this, my income has also been very irregular for some time now. This is something of a problem when my PC is over a decade old. It’s gotten to a point where it now makes obnoxious and concerning noises whenever I do any heavy-duty tasks on it (a list that includes gaming and using publishing software). Thus, I’ve avoided doing them. Now that I have a steady income again, I’ll finally be able to buy a new rig and get back to doing those things.

Finally — and most crucially — I’ve been busy working away behind the scenes on the next MMO Folklorist book. This is my current top priority, so it will come at the expense of the many posts I would like to one day write here on the blog. The expansive topic of the book makes it an ambitious project and if I don’t devote all my efforts to it then I’m afraid it’ll never see the light of day. As it stands, I’ve made some real progress on it over the past few months and I’m very excited to be able to share a title and some early details later on in August.

What I’ve been playing

I have, of course, been filling my scant spare hours with some gaming. Just mostly of the single-player, console kind. So far this year I’ve finished Death Stranding DC, Halo Infinite, FFVII Crisis Core Reunion, The Last of Us Part I, and Octopath Traveller. So, a fairly good effort in catching up on my backlog.

In August I’ll be carrying on with my playthrough of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth before I put single-player games aside again for a while. Besides that, I’ve just picked Warframe up again (my third attempt at getting into it) — this time on Xbox Series X. I’ve so far plugged about 12 hours into it, which is about as far as I’ve ever stuck it out.

I’m quite keen now to get my teeth into a ‘proper’ MMORPG again, and I’m weighing up a few options. For now, however, it’s a decision I can carry on mulling over until I pull the trigger on that new PC; and slip into something of a routine in my new day job.

That’s about all for now. Suffice to say, I’m still here and still plugging away at things in the background. The rest of this month will likely be quiet, but I’ll be ramping up posting both here and on my social channels once I’ve announced my new book. Be sure to subscribe to the blog or follow me on any of the social channels linked at the bottom of the page to hear all the details on that as soon as they drop.

  1. I have your pirate server roundup from 2022 bookmarked and end up on this site maybe once a year or so. Every time I make it back I end up reading the rest of your blogs and enjoy them every time. I appreciate your perspective and love for the genre. I’m excited for the book and I’ll be getting a copy! I hope the new career goes well and you can get into a proper mmo again soon! I missed the original WoW and was playing GW1 and City of Heroes at the time instead. But Recently I’ve been playing Turtle WoW and Old School Runescape and loving them both! Just a little food for thought while you’re mulling over your options for the new PC. Cheers!

    1. Dustin, I really can’t thank you enough for the kind words. Comments like this are what keep me going. OS RuneScape is definitely one I’ll be hopping into at some point as it’s been many, many years since I last poked my head in there – very interesting and heartening to see its recent boom.

  2. Miss the Rogue Server Round up series! I’ve been hosting game servers for 10 years now and you’re series is what got me motivated to start working on and launching our own SWG Server. Hope you’re doing well with your new job and hope you return to the scene soon!
